How One Artist Looks to Discarded Denim to Showcase Resilience

From Friday, January 24, to Sunday, February 2, DUER is proud to present a collaborative installation at its Ossington storefront in partnership with multidisciplinary artist Ruth Wickremesooriya, as part of DesignTO, Canada’s largest design festival.

The artwork features hundreds of denim “leaves” meticulously hand-woven from deconstructed jeans. Beyond its striking visual appeal, the piece invites interaction. “The leaves represent hidden disappointments and burdens we carry,” Ruth explains. “Visitors are encouraged to take a leaf and place it on the ground, symbolizing the release of unhealthy expectations. Just as fallen leaves nourish the soil, letting go can create space for growth.”

This installation is part of Wickremesooriya’s multi-work exhibition, Winter Waiting, on display at DUER Ossington throughout the festival. Each piece in the collection uses discarded denim as the primary medium, underscoring themes of sustainability and creative reuse. “Collaborating with DUER felt like a natural fit,” Ruth shares. “We both value denim, natural materials, and creating beyond fleeting trends."
